Oh Silly Me

A Singing OstrichThese are some silly things about me:

  • I have a birthmark on my right hand. It is my own splot of purple paint. If I rub it and say “Abracadabra”, it will disappear. It does come back, and its a good thing, because it helps me tell my right hand from my left and left turns from right turns!
  • One year I was voted Girl Scout Leader of the Year by my troop. I loved being a girl scout leader.
  • I love to tell jokes, but my family does not think I am funny. They made a laugh track on a tape recorder and play it when I tell a joke, so I won’t be the only one laughing.
  • I like to draw on my jeans. (Do not do this until you buy your own jeans or you have permission!) One of my favorite pairs of jeans I let my kids and their friends decorate. They chose a word that inspired them, drew a little picture then signed their name. Every time I put them on I smile.
  • My house is painted with all sorts of bright colors. One kitchen had red walls, with purple trim, green counters and a black and white checkered floor. A friend brought her daughter over.  Upon entering the room, she started tugging frantically on her mother's  sleeve. “Is this the play kitchen?” she asked. Our new house has even brighter colors. We have a zebra pattern carpet that runs up the front staircase!
  • I like to throw theme parties, especially when a great movie comes out. When Pirates of the Caribbean premiered, I captained a swashbuckling bash. With hooks on their hands, kids had to dig into sand pits and pull out skeleton rings and and gold earrings. Fully dressed with their newly acquired spoils, it was on to a game of “hook and hit” putt-putt golf.
  • I have a pair of biker boots with flames on the toes and on the heels. I wear them with this fancy dress that has the same colors. Parents never notice the boots, but kids do!
  • Silly socks make me smile, so I always try to pick a special pair for every day. I would like to design a pair of socks one day.
  • Reading is my magic carpet. I especially love picture books. I think adults should have to read them, even if they don’t have kids.
  • Hand-held video game sounds and background music makes my spine twitch. There is something alien about it–evil alien.
  • I always wanted a nickname. When I was in the fifth grade, I gave myself the nickname “Psychedelic Squid”. It didn’t stick. Nowadays people call me Lady Rags, or Rags, but my favorite is Miss Rat’s Tail, dubbed by a boy who had trouble pronouncing my last name.
  • I love sugar, especially Pixie sticks.  I didn’t start to eat chocolate until I was over thirty years old. One of my favorite sayings is, “ Eat dessert first, you don’t know what may happen.”
  • My favorite Poem is by Max Ehrmann called Desiderata. One of my favorite stanzas: You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees or the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
  • Whenever I don’t know the words to a song I sing the word, “watermelon”. It has enough syllables to fit any rhythm!
  • I was forty-five years old when I designed my tattoo. It’s inked on my right ankle. It is a ring of flowers with a dreaming gecko charm. In the summer I use glue-on jewels in the flowers to make them sparkle. Do not do this until you are an adult. I was way old when I did it and my mom still yelled at me. I was, however, way too old to sit in the corner.
